Babar Azam, Pakistan’s leading batter, is poised for a potential reinstatement as the national cricket team’s captain.
Babar Azam stepped down from leading the team in all cricket formats after Pakistan’s disappointing showing in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023, not reaching the group stage with five defeats in nine games.
Reports indicate the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has initiated discussions with Azam. A meeting is anticipated before he heads to Abbottabad for a fitness camp at the military academy Kakul. This development came after Azam stepped down, and a decision was made with PCB Chairman Zaka Ashraf.
In the interim, Shaheen Afridi assumed the T20 international captaincy, a role he undertook for a series in New Zealand. Under his leadership, Pakistan faced a 4-1 series defeat. Afridi’s appointment came amidst a challenging phase, including a notably poor performance by Lahore Qalandars in the Pakistan Super League, securing only one victory in 10 matches.
