A hattrick by Australia’s Chris Ciriello ensured his team to win the Men’s Field Hockey World Cup after the side thrashed hosts Netherlands 6-1 in the final on Sunday at the Dutch capital The Hague on Sunday.

Joroen Hertzberger put Netherlands in front in the 14th minute but Chris Ciriello equalized six minutes later for Australia.

Kieran Govers took the lead for Australia in 24th minute.

After half time, things went from bad to worse for the hosts as Glenn Turner made it 3-1 for Australia in the 37th minute whereas Ciriello netted the fourth ten minutes later.

Ciriello scored his hattrick in the 53rd minute and made it 5-1 and Jamie Dwyer put the cherry on top after scoring the sixth in the 64th minute. Argentina came third in the field hockey world cup after beating England 2-0 whereas Belgium came fifth as they beat Germany 4-2.

New Zealand secured the seventh spot after beating Spain by penalty shootout.

This was the first Hockey world cup in which former world champions Pakistan  were not participating.
