Pakistan’s snooker ace, Mohammad Asif, won against the legendary seven-time world champion, Stephen Hendry, in Monday’s British Open 2023 qualifying round.
In a captivating best-of-seven showdown, Asif managed to best the Scottish maestro with a 4-2 win. Despite Hendry’s impressive start, marked by a 73 break, Asif swiftly regained momentum, securing three consecutive frames and establishing a 3-1 lead.
Though Hendry showcased his champion prowess in the fifth frame, scoring 74-43 and narrowing Asif’s lead, Asif held his nerve. He delivered a decisive 66 break in the sixth frame, concluding the match with a 4-2 scoreline. The individual frame scores were 6-92, 85-11, 63-41, 58-41, 43-74, and 67-30.
This victory earned Asif a spot in the main draw featuring 64 players and a prize purse of three thousand pounds. Meanwhile, another Pakistani contender, Asjad Iqbal, is set to compete against China’s Tian Pengfei in the upcoming qualifying round on Wednesday.
