HUMAHUACA, Jujuy: An Argentine Indigenous eviction injured at least 10 people and demolished three homes on August 10, community leaders said. Local reports placed Humahuaca northwest of Buenos Aires, Argentina’s South American capital.

Santa Rosa community vice-president Ángel Mendoza told Radio 2 that police used tear gas and rubber rounds during the operation. He said heavy machinery destroyed three houses occupied by three families.

Mendoza said at least 10 residents suffered pellet injuries, including wounds to faces and bodies. The community alleged officers fired at close range and violated rules for non-lethal weapons.

The Argentina Indigenous eviction involved Jujuy provincial police, not Argentina’s national army, according to Todo Jujuy. The outlet said Judge Juan Pablo Calderón issued the eviction order.

En Argentina, el régimen de Milei envió a un ejército a desalojar una comunidad indígena originaria, disparando balas de goma y gases lacrimógenos contra los nativos, hiriendo a 10 personas y arrasando sus casas.

Judicial authorities confirmed two complaints, Todo Jujuy reported. One resident alleged abuse of authority, while police reported injuries among officers.

Mendoza initially said community members lacked information about eight children removed during the confrontation.

Provincial legislator Natalia Morales later said the children had been released. Authorities told Todo Jujuy that police had held no one by midday on August 11.

Local reports described an internal dispute between community factions over the boundaries of a parcel of land. The Santa Rosa leadership challenged the documents supporting the rival claim and the issuing court’s jurisdiction.

Displaced families requested shelter and support from the municipal and provincial authorities in Humahuaca and Jujuy, Mendoza said.
