AMSTELVEEN, Netherlands: Argentina’s Hockey World Cup win came after a 3-1 shootout victory over the Netherlands on Saturday, following a 1-1 draw in the 2026 FIH Hockey World Cup final.

The final began at Wagener Hockey Stadium on August 29. The Netherlands entered the match as three-time defending world champions.

Yibbi Jansen gave the Dutch a 1-0 lead from their first penalty corner with 51 seconds left before halftime. Argentina then increased the pressure after the break but initially failed to convert several penalty-corner chances.

María Granatto finally equalised with six minutes remaining. She reacted first to a rebound from another penalty corner and scored to force the match into a shootout.

Argentina goalkeeper Cristina Cosentino then helped Las Leonas win the shootout 3-1. FIH named her Player of the Match after Argentina secured their first women’s World Cup crown since 2010.

“I really have no words for this,” Cosentino said after the victory. The defeat stopped the Netherlands from winning a fourth consecutive title.

It was also the fifth women’s Hockey World Cup final contested by Argentina and the Dutch. Earlier, Belgium beat Australia 1-0 for bronze after Charlotte Englebert scored from a penalty corner in the 20th minute.

The result gave Belgium their first women’s World Cup medal since 1978.
