NEW YORK: Araghchi’s UNGA visit began Monday as Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi arrived in New York to lead Tehran’s delegation at the 81st United Nations General Assembly.
Araghchi was received at John F. Kennedy International Airport by Gholamhossein Darzi, Iran’s representative and chargé d’affaires to the United Nations, Anadolu Agency reported, citing Iranian state news agency IRNA.
Earlier, Araghchi made a brief stop in Doha, Qatar, before reaching New York. Iranian state media said he held consultations with Qatari officials about recent regional developments.
The visit comes as the UN General Assembly’s 81st-session general debate opens September 22 at United Nations Headquarters in New York. Meanwhile, the debate runs through September 26 and concludes September 28, according to the UN’s official schedule.

Iranian media cited by Anadolu said President Masoud Pezeshkian planned to travel to New York on Tuesday to attend the session and address the assembly. He also plans to meet international officials on the sidelines.
Araghchi’s Doha stop came amid continuing regional diplomacy involving Qatar and Iran. AFP reported that Tehran has been using mediators to communicate with Washington as tensions over the Strait of Hormuz and the wider conflict continue.

The United Nations has scheduled its 2026 High-Level Week from September 22 to 29, bringing heads of state, government leaders and senior diplomats to New York for the general debate and other high-level meetings.
