Apple has executed a major leadership change in its artificial intelligence division. The company has replaced its longtime AI chief, John Giannandrea, with former Google and Microsoft executive Amar Subramanya.

John Giannandrea, who has led Apple’s AI efforts since 2018, is stepping down from his role. The company confirmed the transition in an official statement, noting he will continue in an advisory capacity through next spring.

Amar Subramanya brings significant industry experience to the position. He is a well-known veteran in the field of artificial intelligence. Subramanya most recently served as Microsoft’s Corporate Vice President of AI. Before that, he spent 16 years at Google, where he most recently led the engineering team for the Gemini Assistant project.

In his new role at Apple, Subramanya will oversee critical areas. These responsibilities include Apple Foundation Models, Machine Learning research, and AI safety and evaluation.

Apple has tapped veteran Google and Microsoft engineer Amar Subramany for the role of its AI Chief, replacing John Giannandrea.

The critical shakeup comes amid criticism that Apple is lagging behind its competitors in developing AI-driven features.https://t.co/RxtOfF2TAP

Context: Apple’s Push to Compete in AI

This leadership change occurs as Apple faces increasing pressure in the AI arena. Critics and analysts note that the company lags behind key competitors such as Google, Microsoft, and OpenAI in integrating advanced AI features into its devices.

Experts view the appointment as a long-awaited strategic revamp. It signals Apple’s commitment to accelerating its AI development and to strengthening its competitive positioning. Apple’s flagship AI initiative, “Apple Intelligence,” has faced challenges since its October 2024 launch. The company also delayed the rollout of a more advanced Siri digital assistant until next year.

Meanwhile, Apple’s primary market competitors continue to advance rapidly. Companies like Google, Microsoft, and OpenAI are locked in intense competition, frequently releasing improved AI models and features.

This aggressive innovation race aims to establish leadership in what many consider the defining technology of the 21st century. Apple’s leadership change is a direct response to this competitive pressure.
