Anthropic AI Shutdown Raises Investor Risk Concerns

Concerns about the Anthropic AI shutdown widened in Silicon Valley after the US government forced the company to stop access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5, only days after launch.

Anthropic suspended access to Claude Fable 5 and Claude Mythos 5 after a US export control directive, the company said in a June 12 update. AWS also said Anthropic asked it to revoke access to both models for all users.

The order followed a complaint about a jailbreak technique that could bypass specific safety protocols. It said federal officials treated the vulnerability as a national security risk.

Anthropic defended its safety work and said it had spent thousands of hours testing guardrails before release. The company said Fable 5 used stronger safeguards than any previously released AI model.

The shutdown moved the story beyond product access. The investors are now weighing whether expensive AI launches face a bigger regulatory risk if products can be halted soon after release.

AI development requires significant investment in chips, data centres, software and research teams. The investors had already accepted technical risk, but the Anthropic case raised a sharper question about government intervention.

Fable 5 and Mythos 5 remain out of commission. Anthropic said it was working to restore access as soon as possible
