Amnesty International, alongside various human rights entities, urged Pakistani authorities on Tuesday to ensure all citizens maintain continuous access to the internet and digital communication channels throughout the upcoming election period.

This request was made in light of Caretaker Interior Minister Gohar Ejaz’s recent acknowledgment of potential internet interruptions during Thursday’s voting process.

Ensuring Freedom of Expression

Amnesty International highlighted the significance of unfettered internet access, stressing its necessity for preserving free expression rights and the seamless exchange and retrieval of information online.

Despite no current orders to halt mobile or internet services on election day, the appeal specifically targets Prime Minister Anwarul Haq Kakar and the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), advocating for preemptive steps to secure complete internet and social media connectivity during the elections.

The organizations argue that access to digital platforms is crucial for democratic engagement, informed discussions, and exercising essential freedoms. They caution that any election-related internet disruptions could severely hamper the democratic framework and restrict citizens’ access to vital information and their capacity to voice opinions freely.
