SANTA CLARA, California: The AMD Anthropic deal will deploy up to 2 gigawatts of AMD Instinct MI450-series GPUs, while AMD has committed up to $5 billion for a future equity investment in the Claude developer.
AMD announced the agreement at 9 a.m. EDT on July 22 said the first 1-gigawatt deployment would begin during the first half of 2027.
Anthropic will use AMD Helios rack-scale systems equipped with MI455X GPUs from the MI450 series. The systems will also incorporate AMD EPYC “Venice” processors, Pensando networking technology and ROCm software.
The deployment expands Anthropic’s existing use of AMD Instinct MI355X accelerators and will support the training and operation of Claude models, according to AMD’s corporate announcement.
The companies also agreed to a multi-year engineering collaboration. Anthropic will use Claude to optimise workloads for AMD Instinct GPUs and accelerate ROCm software development, while AMD plans to adopt Claude across its engineering and product development teams.
Anthropic co-founder and Chief Compute Officer Tom Brown said access to computing capacity remained central to meeting customer demand and keeping Claude competitive. He said using multiple hardware platforms would allow Anthropic to assign workloads to the most suitable infrastructure.

AMD described the proposed investment as a future strategic equity commitment. Its announcement did not disclose Anthropic’s valuation, investment schedule or detailed financial terms.
