WASHINGTON: Vice President JD Vance said Tuesday the Trump administration plans ACA enrollee removals affecting about 760,000 people. He alleged they were enrolled in marketplace health plans fraudulently, improperly or unknowingly.
The action involves cancelling about 315,000 enrollments covering 760,000 people, according to Vance. Another 419,000 enrollments will undergo additional eligibility checks.
Administration officials said the affected cases include people who did not meet eligibility requirements. These also include consumers allegedly enrolled without their knowledge. Vance said subsidies should go only to people entitled to receive them.
The administration also announced a six-month suspension on new agents and brokers enrolling consumers in marketplace coverage. Officials alleged brokers accounted for a disproportionate share of improper enrollment uncovered by investigators.

Democratic Representative Richard Neal of Massachusetts criticised the decision that it would make health coverage harder to obtain after premiums increased for many marketplace customers. This happened following the expiration of enhanced federal subsidies.

A December Government Accountability Office review found weaknesses in marketplace enrollment controls. This followed tests in 2024 and 2025 in which nearly all fictitious applicants obtained subsidised coverage. The GAO cautioned that its covert testing cannot be generalised to the wider enrollee population.
