SANTA SUSANNA, Spain: Japanese bodybuilder Toshisuke Kanazawa, 90, competed against rivals decades younger on Friday, taking the stage in a masters category for athletes aged 50 and older.
He did not secure a podium finish, but his ambitions extend beyond the latest competition. Kanazawa hopes to continue bodybuilding throughout his life and is considering another competitive appearance before retiring.
“I’m thinking I might give it one more go at 93,” he said.
Backstage, he prepared alongside younger competitors, warming up with his team and receiving a spray tan before posing under the lights.
His appearance formed part of the world championships organised by the International Fitness and Bodybuilding Federation (IFBB) in the Spanish coastal town.
Kanazawa described a longstanding interest in taking on challenges others had not. He hoped his participation would encourage older people to stay active and pursue their own goals.
Discussing his routine, he credited traditional Japanese food with supporting his conditioning. He described eating brown rice, natto fermented soybeans and miso soup while building muscle since turning 50.
