The 2026 NFL Draft results opened with a surprise on April 23 as the Las Vegas Raiders selected Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza with the No. 1 overall pick, signalling a bold reset for the franchise.

Held Thursday night, the first round featured major trades and unexpected selections that reshaped several teams’ futures.

The 2026 NFL Draft began with the Las Vegas Raiders selecting Heisman-winning quarterback Fernando Mendoza first overall. Several teams strengthened their rosters with key additions, while others faced criticism for questionable picks. Analysts now turn attention to rounds 2 and 3 for further roster shaping.

The biggest headline in the 2026 NFL Draft results was Las Vegas committing to Mendoza as its long-term quarterback. The Heisman Trophy winner is expected to become the face of the franchise.

The New York Giants improved depth by adding Arvell Reese and offensive tackle Francis Mauigoa. The Dallas Cowboys made an aggressive trade to secure safety Caleb Downs, widely described as a transformative talent.

Philadelphia Eagles and Washington Commanders also added top prospects, strengthening competition within the division. The Los Angeles Rams selected Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson at No. 13, signalling preparation for life after veteran Matthew Stafford.

Not every team came away with praise from analysts reviewing the 2026 NFL Draft results. The New York Jets faced criticism despite holding three first-round picks. Their decision to select edge rusher David Bairly at No. 2 overall was widely viewed as a reach.

The Arizona Cardinals’ decision to draft running back Jeremiyah Love drew scrutiny, given ongoing issues with their offensive line and defensive gaps. The Miami Dolphins also disappointed observers. After investing in quarterback Malik Willis during free agency, they failed to add significant offensive support around him.

Round 2 and 3 Predictions Take Shape

As attention shifts beyond the first round, analysts have already begun forecasting key selections. San Francisco is likely to target safety Emmanuel McNeil-Warren early in Round 2, while Arizona may view quarterback Carson Beck as a long-term option.

Buffalo may add wide receiver Denzel Boston to strengthen its red-zone threat. Pittsburgh is also likely to target quarterback Garrett Nussmeier as teams continue to prioritise depth at the position.

In Round 3, Philadelphia will likely focus on reinforcing the offensive line, while Miami may target tight end Oscar Delp to strengthen its passing game.

Mendoza’s Heisman-winning season and strong quarterback fundamentals established him as a leading prospect. Teams place enormous value on franchise quarterbacks, and Las Vegas made securing a long-term leader for its offence a clear priority.

The Raiders, Cowboys, and Giants appear to have made the strongest gains by addressing key needs and adding high-impact players. Their selections could contribute immediately.

Fans can expect teams to focus on depth positions such as the offensive line, secondary, and wide receiver. Franchises may also continue selecting quarterbacks as they build for the future.

The 2026 NFL Draft has already begun to reshape team strategies, and Rounds 2 and 3 could deliver further surprises as franchises continue building for the upcoming season.
