Christine Vachon and other film executives tested “Trainspotting,” “Ratcatcher,” “Local Hero” and “The Wicker Man” against the realities of 2026 film financing at the Edinburgh International Film Festival.

The panel included Killer Films producer Vachon, Picturehouse creative director Clare Binns, Film4 distribution and sales head Stefanie Fahrion, BBC Film commissioning executive Alice Ojha and Casarotto’s Simon Renshaw. Wendy Mitchell hosted the session.

Discussing Danny Boyle’s “Trainspotting,” Fahrion said its memorable and provocative moments could generate conversation and audience FOMO today. Ojha also pointed to Irvine Welsh’s source novel as an existing audience base that could reduce financing risk.

Vachon said she would position the film as genre or genre-adjacent and argued that it would not be particularly risky at the right budget. Binns also cited Boyle’s earlier “Shallow Grave” as evidence of a distinctive filmmaking voice.

For Bill Forsyth’s “Local Hero,” Vachon said US equity or pre-sales would be difficult without a major star. She suggested relying on public or other “soft money” before selling the completed film to American distributors.

Lynne Ramsay’s “Ratcatcher” highlighted the continuing difficulty of financing first features. Renshaw said moving from shorts to a debut feature remains a major hurdle, while Fahrion pointed to UK public funding as a route for unconventional new filmmakers.

Vachon said a comparable US production might need to be made for about $300,000. By contrast, she described “The Wicker Man” as the type of genre project that companies such as A24 and Neon could pursue in the current market.
