The Television Academy has moved five 2026 Emmy Awards categories from the main NBC telecast to ceremonies scheduled for September 5 and 6, reducing the live broadcast to 19 awards.
The changes affect Writing for a Variety Series, Supporting Actor and Supporting Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie, and directing and writing for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie, according to the Television Academy’s July 17 announcement.
The academy said the changes reflect the growing breadth of television work recognised each year and the need to keep the main ceremony within its three-hour broadcast window. The affected awards have not been eliminated and will remain part of the Emmy ceremonies.
The supporting actor category includes Jason Bateman for “DTF St. Louis,” Richard Gadd for “Half Man,” David Harbour and Richard Jenkins for “DTF St. Louis,” Charles Melton for “Beef,” and Nick Offerman for “Death by Lightning,” according to the academy’s nominations list.
The 78th Emmy Awards will be hosted by actor Mariska Hargitay at the Peacock Theatre in Los Angeles on September 14. The ceremony will air live on NBC at 8 p.m. ET and stream on Peacock, NBC confirmed.
Medical drama “The Pitt” leads the 2026 nominations with 25, while comedy series “Hacks” received 24 and set a category record, according to the Television Academy.
