Pakistan’s media regulatory body earlier today slapped a ban on the use of religious titles and qualification for people suspected of involvement in terrorism.
In a new directive, Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) advised the channels not to use “respectable titles and qualifications such as Maulana, Maulvi, Qari, Mufti, Hafiz, Doctor/engineer etc for persons involved in terrorist activities.”
The PEMRA said that use of these titles amount to glorification of terrorism.
“A comprehensive media campaign may be run on media to expose and discredit terrorist outfits,” it said.
The authority urged the media channels to comply with the order in letter and spirit.
