The State Bank of Pakistan yesterday issued directives to banks for printing cheque books and other documents in braille script within three months to facilitate the blind.
It is obligatory upon banks and microfinance banks (MFBs) to make their financial services accessible to the people with disabilities, especially those who are visually impaired or completely blind, said a circular issued by the State Bank.
The bank has also framed general guidelines containing instructions pertaining to opening and operation of bank account, cash withdrawal, cheque book facility, credit cards, ATM/debit cards, phone and internet banking, lockers and extension of loans.
“Across advanced global financial jurisdictions, it is illegal to discriminate against anyone on the basis of disability,” said a circular issued by the SBP, adding that the Constitution also provides that all citizens are equal before law and are entitled to equal protection of law.
“The banks and MFBs should arrange printing of all related stationery, forms, documents etc. in braille script within three months from the date of issuance of the circular,” said the SBP.
