Lahore High Court earlier today handed death sentences to the father, brother and cousin of Farzana Iqbal who was stoned to death in an apparent ‘honour killing’.
Twenty-five year old Farzana Iqbal of Chak 167, Jaranwala, was previously engaged to a cousin but choosing to marry Muhammad Iqbal instead, her family registered a kidnapping case against Iqbal.
Waiting at LHC to record her statement in favour of her husband, members of her family opened fire at her followed by nearly a dozen men, including her father, brothers and former fiancée pelting her with stones and bricks.
An anti-terrorism court today gave its decision on the case and sentenced Farzana’s father Iqbal, brother Zahid Iqbal and cousin Jahan Khan to death.
Another suspect Ghulam Ali was also sentenced to ten years in prison and a fine of Rs1 million.
Every year in Pakistan, honour killings claim an estimated 1,000 lives of women.
