Zohran Mamdani, the Democratic nominee for New York City mayor, fiercely rejected President Donald Trump’s threat to arrest him over his pledge to block Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations. Mamdani’s bold stance, following his primary win, has sparked intense debate.
The Guardian and ABC News reported that during a press conference at a Florida migrant detention centre, Trump threatened to arrest Mamdani if he prevents ICE from deporting immigrants, calling him a “communist” and falsely questioning his citizenship. Mamdani, a naturalised U.S. citizen since 2018, responded on X, stating, “The President threatened to have me arrested, stripped of my citizenship, and deported, not because I broke any law but because I will refuse to let ICE terrorise our city.” He emphasised, “We will not accept this intimidation,” framing Trump’s remarks as an attack on democracy.

Mamdani’s Primary Victory
Mamdani, a 33-year-old democratic socialist, secured the Democratic nomination on June 24, 2025, defeating former Governor Andrew Cuomo with 56% of the ranked-choice vote. His campaign, focused on working-class and immigrant communities, resonated widely, as seen in viral social media clips. Mamdani criticised Trump’s support for Mayor Eric Adams, alleging Adams traded cooperation with ICE for dropped corruption charges.

Born in Uganda to Indian parents, Mamdani became a U.S. citizen in 2018. Republicans, including Rep. Andy Ogles, have called for his denaturalisation, citing baseless claims of “terrorism support” tied to his pro-Palestinian stance. Trump’s remarks, amplified by figures like Stephen Miller, falsely suggest that Mamdani is in the U.S. illegally. Mamdani condemned these attacks as Islamophobic, gaining support from figures like Governor Kathy Hochul.

Mamdani’s defiance of Trump’s threats highlights tensions over immigration policy and democratic norms. His potential to become NYC’s first Muslim mayor, coupled with his progressive platform, challenges the political establishment. The controversy, fueled by Trump’s rhetoric, underscores the stakes of the November 2025 election, impacting New Yorkers and national discourse on immigration and governance.
