Zia Chishti Secures Victory in Defamation Suit Against Narratives Magazine Editor Amir Zia.
Pakistani-American entrepreneur Zia Chishti triumphed in a significant defamation lawsuit against Narratives Magazine and its editor, Amir Zia.
The Lahore District Court ruled in favour of Chishti, recognizing that the magazine had falsely and maliciously defamed him, ordering the publication to retract and apologise.
Chishti, renowned for founding a multi-billion-dollar dental brace company and an artificial intelligence firm, was accused by Narratives Magazine of sexual misconduct and violating corporate laws—claims deemed unfounded by the court.
Additional District Judge Muhammad Farhan Nabi of Lahore ruled conclusively that Zia Chishti was subjected to defamation without any legitimate basis and with evident malice. The judge’s scathing verdict highlighted that Narratives Magazine failed to present any credible evidence in its defence.
Reflecting the severity of the defamation, the court granted Chishti the largest defamation damages ever awarded in Pakistan’s history. Additionally, the judge ordered the magazine’s editor to issue a public clarification and apology concerning the contentious article.
Harvard Professor Emeritus Alan Dershowitz, who has followed the case closely, praised the decision. He criticized the rush to judgment prevalent in today’s media landscape, which often overlooks the principles of due process and the presumption of innocence.
The ruling marks a significant vindication for Chishti and sets a precedent for how defamation cases involving public figures are handled in Pakistan and internationally.
