Sony Pictures will release The Legend of Zelda’s highly anticipated live-action adaptation in theatres on March 26, 2027.
The Legend of Zelda Adventure film, a collaboration between Sony and Nintendo, aims to bring the beloved video game to life on the big screen. Nintendo announced this exciting milestone through its new app, Nintendo Today, over a year after the project was first revealed in November 2023.
Zelda creator Shigeru Miyamoto first confirmed the film’s development on social media in 2023. He teams up with producer Avi Arad, known for hits like Spider-Man, to helm the project. “I’ve collaborated with Avi Arad-san for years on this film,” Miyamoto shared. “
Nintendo plays a major role in its production, and I’m thrilled for fans to see it.” Wes Ball, director of The Maze Runner trilogy and Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, directs and produces alongside Joe Hartwick Jr. under their banner, Oddball Entertainment.

Nintendo funds most of the film, with Sony Pictures co-financing the venture. While casting and plot details remain under wraps, anticipation runs high. Miyamoto noted, “Development has officially begun, but it’ll take time. Stay excited!”
Building on Mario’s Success
The project follows the blockbuster triumph of The Super Mario Bros. Movie. Released in April 2023 by Nintendo, Universal Pictures, and Illumination, the animated hit earned over $1.3 billion globally, ranking as the 18th-highest-grossing film ever. This success likely fueled momentum for Zelda’s live-action leap.
