Asif Ali Zardari called for national unity, democratic responsibility, and economic discipline as Pakistan stepped into 2026. He urged citizens and political forces to work together at a critical moment in the country’s history.
In his New Year message, the president extended greetings to the people of Pakistan, overseas Pakistanis, and the international community. He noted that the nation is approaching its 79th Independence Day. This time demands what he described as “national soul-searching and collective resolve.”
President Zardari emphasised the need to prioritise productivity over populism, exports over excuses, and inclusive growth over crony capitalism. He called for sustained investment in education, healthcare, youth development, artificial intelligence, and emerging technologies. These initiatives are to strengthen Pakistan’s long-term economic foundations.

Addressing the domestic political climate, the president said democracy flourishes through disagreement conducted with civility and responsibility. He urged political parties to engage constructively in Parliament. He warned against allowing any political cause to be exploited by hostile elements seeking to destabilise the country or sponsor terrorism.
“This is not the time to turn on the heat. It is time to turn on the light,” he said, underscoring the need for reasoned dialogue over confrontation.

As the constitutional symbol of national unity, President Zardari said he is prepared to lead reconciliation and healing. This is to bridge political divides and rebuild trust among democratic forces. He stressed that Pakistan needs cooperation, not conflict, to move forward.
On regional issues, the president expressed concern over what he termed the “weaponisation of water” by India. He described it as a violation of international agreements and international law. He added that Pakistan reserves the right to address the matter through all available means.
