YouTube has escalated its measures against third-party ad blockers by implementing a new system that automatically skips videos to their end for users with activated ad blockers.
According to a report, this tactic is YouTube’s latest approach to addressing the ongoing challenge of ad blockers. The initiative expands on previous actions targeting unauthorized apps and browser plugins that bypass ads on videos, which are crucial for the platform’s revenue model.
On the YouTube subreddit, a user named SDHD4K demonstrated this phenomenon in a video clip titled “New Youtube AdBlock weird behaviour—video automatically skips to the end.” The clip shows how activating an ad blocker causes the video to fast-forward to the conclusion, preventing any actual viewing.

Other users in the same subreddit have also reported encountering silent videos after circumventing the skipping issue. A user noted, “And if you get around that skip, the video plays without audio. You can only hear something when you turn the volume up or down, but the audio turns silent as soon as you ‘let go’ of the volume control.”
YouTube’s crackdown on ad blockers intensified in recent months. In May 2023, YouTube introduced 30-second unskippable ads on its TV app. By June, the platform launched a global experiment encouraging viewers using ad blockers to either enable ads on YouTube or subscribe to YouTube Premium. This initiative soon escalated into a more comprehensive global effort to combat ad blockers violating its service terms.
Christopher Lawton, YouTube’s Communications Manager, told The Verge that the enforcement is crucial because “ads support a diverse ecosystem of creators globally and allow billions to access their favourite content on YouTube.” While YouTube earns revenue from features like Super Chat and channel memberships, advertisements remain its primary financial backbone, undermined by third-party ad blockers.
