The Wall Street Journal reported YouTube is conducting internal tests for a new product aimed at playing online games. An email sent to Google employees revealed that the product, called ‘Playables,’ is being offered for testing.
The report mentioned that the available games for testing include titles like the arcade game Stack Bounce. These games can be played on YouTube’s website through web browsers or on devices running Google’s Android and Apple’s iOS mobile systems.
A spokesperson for YouTube acknowledged that gaming had been a longstanding focus for the platform. They also mentioned that the company is exploring new features but has no official announcements.
The Wall Street Journal report highlighted that hosting online games on YouTube aligns with CEO Neal Mohan’s strategy to venture into new growth areas amid slow advertising spending. YouTube is a popular platform for game streaming and watching live-streamed game footage.
