YouTube is set to expand its short-form video platform, YouTube Shorts, by allowing creators to upload up to three minutes long starting October 15, 2024.

This significant update aims to give creators more flexibility to craft immersive stories that extend beyond the previous one-minute limit.

Short on time? Not anymore!

3 minute long videos that are square or taller in aspect ratio will be considered a Short very soon!! We're excited to be bringing this top feature request to our creators 🫶

The decision to increase video length puts YouTube Shorts on par with TikTok, which adopted a three-minute limit in 2021.

Todd Sherman, director of product management for YouTube Shorts, stated that this update caters to the demand for longer short-form content, enabling deeper audience engagement.

Big Shorts news!

👖 Longer Shorts — Up to 3 min!
🪄 Templates!
🕺 Stay on top of trends!
🫣 Show fewer Shorts!
✨ Veo in Dream Screen
➕ And more!

So excited for @YouTubeCreators @tdd ! pic.twitter.com/KsvDkkNGKe

The update includes extended video lengths and improved recommendations for longer Shorts, helping creators reach their target audience more effectively.

YouTube also introduces a “Show Fewer Shorts” option in home feed settings, responding to user feedback for a tailored viewing experience.

Additionally, a new template feature will allow creators to remix trending videos easily. By selecting “Use this template” after hitting the “Remix” button on a Short, creators can leverage popular sounds and styles, simplifying the content creation. This feature is similar to those on TikTok and Instagram Reels.

YouTube also enhances the Shorts player’s look and introduces a new Shorts trends page on mobile.

This update will help users discover trending content locally and allow them to view comments directly in the Shorts feed.
