Atlanta’s hip-hop community is mourning the loss of rapper Young Scooter, born Kenneth Edward Bailey, who passed away at 39 on what should have been a day of celebration for his birthday.

Young Scooter, known for his raw street anthems and collaborations with icons like Future and Gucci Mane, Scooter’s life ended abruptly after a fatal leg injury sustained while evading police in Atlanta. He was pronounced dead at Grady Marcus Trauma Center, leaving fans and peers in disbelief.

The tragic incident unfolded when Atlanta police responded to a call about a possible dispute involving a firearm. Witnesses reported hearing gunshots and claimed a woman was dragged back into a residence. According to Lt. Andrew Smith of the Atlanta Police Department, officers knocked on the door, but a man, later identified as Scooter, opened it briefly before slamming it shut. As police secured the area, two men bolted from the rear of the house.

One suspect eventually returned, but Scooter’s escape took a deadly turn. Authorities found him on the other side of a fence with a severe leg injury sustained after leaping over two barriers in his attempt to flee. Emergency crews rushed him to the hospital, but despite their efforts, he succumbed to his injuries. Lt. Smith clarified that Scooter’s wounds were not inflicted by police but resulted from his desperate escape.

Young Scooter’s Rise in Hip-Hop

Young Scooter burst onto the rap scene in 2012 after signing with Future’s Freebandz label. His gritty lyrics and authentic storytelling resonated with fans, cementing his status in Atlanta’s vibrant music culture. He collaborated with Gucci Mane on the acclaimed Free Bricks 2 mixtape and featured heavyweights like Young Dolph and Chief Keef on his standout Street Lottery project. These works showcased his talent and solidified his influence in the genre.
