Dr. Yasmin Rashid, a senior leader of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), has been transferred to Shaukat Khanum Memorial Hospital in Punjab’s capital due to deteriorating health.
According to her lawyer, Rashid, who is currently on judicial remand in Kot Lakhpat Jail, had previously received court orders for timely medical attention.
Advocate Rana Mudassar said that Rashid’s health worsened because she did not receive the necessary medical care on time. He mentioned that the full extent of her health issues would become apparent after she undergoes cancer-related tests.
Hospital sources confirmed that Rashid, Punjab’s former health minister, is undergoing specific tests at the medical facility. They noted that she is experiencing breathing difficulties and will have additional check-ups at a government hospital.
In May, she was taken to Lahore’s Services Hospital after collapsing. Rashid has been imprisoned for over a year, facing multiple charges stemming from nationwide protests and riots that broke out on May 9, 2023, after the arrest of PTI founder Imran Khan.
Initially detained under the Maintenance of Public Order Ordinance on May 12, Rashid was later arrested for her alleged involvement in the May 9 disturbances. Many PTI leaders, including the party’s founder, have been jailed for nearly a year, primarily due to charges related to the protests, during which significant state installations were targeted.
