Xiaomi informs prospective buyers of its debut electric sedan, the Xiaomi SU7, about potential delays ranging from four to seven months, indicating robust demand.
The consumer electronics giant commenced order-taking last Thursday, with pre-orders soaring to 88,898 within the first day.
For the standard SU7 model, retailing at 215,900 yuan ($29,870), delivery estimates on Xiaomi’s car app suggest a wait of 18-21 weeks. The SU7 Pro and the highest-priced model, at 299,900 yuan, may see delivery times of up to 27-30 weeks.
The SU7 has garnered attention for its design, reminiscent of Porsche’s Taycan and Panamera models. It is launching into a fiercely competitive market. China’s auto industry, bustling with over 40 brands, is currently in intense pricing battles.
This Monday, Huawei-supported Aito slashed prices on its new M7 SUVs by up to 20,000 yuan until April’s end, mirroring Xpeng’s temporary subsidies for its G9 electric SUV. Chery also introduced various incentives, including tax breaks and cash discounts for some of its gasoline vehicles.
Despite the crowded market, analysts recognize Xiaomi’s financial robustness and smartphone technology prowess as advantageous, particularly in smart dashboard development, a highly valued feature among Chinese consumers.
Xiaomi has further fueled interest by releasing a “Founder’s Edition” of the car, complemented by exclusive gifts, including refrigerators, with the initial 5,000 units selling out instantly.
A second batch of the “Founder’s Edition” has been launched, though the quantity available remains unspecified.
