The recent departure of xAI co-founders Tony Wu and Jimmy Ba has drawn attention, following the exit of several senior figures from Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence venture in a short period.
Over the past week, multiple engineers and executives, including two co-founders, publicly announced their departure. Reports indicate that six of the original 12 co-founders have now left the company.
Elon Musk addressed the situation, describing the changes as part of a broader company reorganisation. He said growing companies must adjust their structure to improve execution and efficiency.
I resigned from xAI today.
This company – and the family we became – will stay with me forever. I will deeply miss the people, the warrooms, and all those battles we have fought together.
It's time for my next chapter. It is an era with full possibilities: a small team armed…

Elon Musk’s Departure From xAI
According to Musk, some individuals are better suited to early-stage startup environments than to later growth phases. He emphasised that xAI recently reorganised to improve speed and performance.
In a post on X, Musk wrote that restructuring required parting ways with certain team members. He framed the exits as necessary for scaling operations rather than as performance-related issues.
The departures come as xAI continues aggressive hiring. Musk has publicly promoted recruitment, encouraging engineers to join the company’s ambitious AI projects.

The wave of exits has raised questions in the tech community. Some departing employees reportedly expressed interest in smaller teams and greater autonomy to innovate more rapidly in AI development.
At the same time, xAI has faced scrutiny over regulatory concerns about explicit deepfakes generated by Grok, its AI system. The controversy has placed additional pressure on the company’s leadership.

Despite the departures, xAI reportedly maintains a workforce of more than 1,000 employees. However, losing half of its original co-founders within a short timeframe has sparked debate about internal dynamics.

Rapid expansion often forces startups to evolve their management structures. Musk’s remarks suggest that xAI is shifting from an early-stage experimental model to a more structured organisation.
Still, the exits highlight the competitive and high-pressure environment of the AI industry. Companies must balance innovation with governance while competing for top engineering talent.
As xAI continues recruiting and reorganising, its ability to stabilise leadership and maintain momentum will remain closely watched.
