Social media platform X, previously Twitter, has announced removing the user blocking feature following a decision by its owner, Elon Musk. While the blocking feature allowed users to prevent unwanted contacts and view their posts, Musk confirmed that while the ‘block’ functionality will be discontinued, the ‘mute’ option will remain. Users can avoid seeing content from specific accounts without notifying the other party.
Musk, known for his staunch free speech stance, has faced criticism for the rise in hate speech on X since his takeover. This decision might also clash with guidelines set by Apple’s App Store and Google Play, which mandate user-blocking abilities for apps with user-generated content. While there was no immediate response from X, Google, or Apple, X’s Chief Executive, Linda Yaccarino, supported Musk’s decision, suggesting they’re working on improved safety features.
