Jose Paulino Gomes, reputed to be the oldest man in the world, has passed away at an impressive age of 127 years, just a week shy of his 128th birthday.
According to local news reports, Gomes breathed his last on July 28th at his residence in Minas Gerais, Brazil. He is survived by an extended family that includes seven children, 25 grandchildren, 42 great-grandchildren, and 11 great-great-grandchildren.
Despite his advanced age, reports indicate that he was active, even riding horses as recently as four years ago.
Born in 1895, Gomes witnessed historical milestones like the death of Queen Victoria, the Wright Brothers’ maiden flight, the discovery of X-rays, and the hardships of two World Wars and three global pandemics. He spent his professional life as an animal tamer.
However, there is some contention over the official title of the oldest person, currently held by Spain’s Maria Branyas Morera, as recognized by Guinness World Records at 115 years old.
Additionally, historical records suggest that French woman Jeanne Calment holds the record for the longest lifespan, having lived until the age of 122 and passing away in 1997.
It remains uncertain whether Guinness World Records will investigate and verify Gomes’s age.”
