The Sindh government has initiated special training programs for women to drive buses. This initiative, specifically intended for its flagship pink buses project, was approved in the 10th board meeting of the Sindh Mass Transit Authority (SMTA). Sharjeel Inam Memon, Provincial Minister for Information and Transport, expressed that the move would promote gender equality and enhance safety and security for women during their commutes. This step aligns with the vision of empowering women, as the Pakistan Peoples Party Chairman, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, advocates.
Progress in Public Transportation and Green Initiatives
The meeting also discussed potential subsidies for the People’s Bus Service and the feasibility of its second phase, which proposes the addition of 500 buses and an eco-friendly electric taxi service. Memon emphasized that these steps would alleviate public commuting issues significantly while fostering a positive environmental impact and creating new job opportunities. Progress of the Red Line Bus Rapid Transit project was also reviewed during the meeting.
