A woman faced a terrifying ordeal when attempting to cook eggs in the microwave following a viral TikTok trend. Shafia Bashir, aged 37, suffered from an explosion that resulted in her skin peeling off her face.
According to a report by the Independent, Ms. Bashir was following a widely circulating recipe for poached eggs when the disastrous incident occurred. She now urges others not to follow this trend and attempt the popular dish due to the dangers involved – the aftermath as “absolute agony.”
In her attempt, she placed the eggs in a mug filled with boiling water and then microwaved them for a few minutes. However, when she inserted a cold spoon into the egg, it “erupted like a fountain,” scalding the right side of her face. Ms. Bashir expressed that it was the most excruciating pain she had ever experienced.

After the incident, she immediately ran her face under the tap before seeking medical attention at the emergency department. The burning sensation lasted for 12 hours. Fortunately, Ms. Bashir’s face has since healed without any lasting scars. She used Vaseline, Sudocrem, and any remedies she could find, as reported by the outlet.
The British Medical Journal has previously emphasized the need for clear warnings on microwave ovens about the risks of exploding eggs. Cooking shelled eggs in a microwave is dangerous due to the casing’s ability to retain heat.
Ms. Bashir revealed that the incident left her traumatized and with a firm decision never to eat eggs again.
