A woman shared an amusing encounter on X, a microblogging platform, detailing how a scammer’s attempt to deceive her on WhatsApp went awry.
The scammer, identifying himself as Ahmed, claimed her husband was “gay” and involved with him. However, he based his accusation on the mistaken belief that her last name, Habibi, was her husband’s when it was her father’s.
In her post, user Jorjor Wel @Salemschild_ described how the scam unfolded. “Weirdest thing happened. Someone got my number, thought my last name was my husband’s, and tried to tell me he was gay. Being told my 70-year-old, very strict military dad is gay wasn’t on my list for 2024. So, I figured I’d humour him,” she wrote, including screenshots of the WhatsApp chat.
In the conversation, Ahmed confessed he learned of Habibi’s marriage in February and intended to confront her about their supposed relationship. He explained that he got her contact information from a payment slip found in his car, which a friend had misinterpreted.
Playing along, the woman jokingly expressed her relief at the news, pretending it gave her a reason to divorce her “husband” and return to her boyfriend. She even concocted a story about her husband contracting HIV, thanking Ahmed for his loyalty.
Since sharing her story, the post has garnered over 232,000 views and more than 2,000 likes, sparking a flurry of amused responses from other social media users.
