WhatsApp is developing a new UPI Lite functionality to simplify the payment process by enabling users to perform transactions without entering a PIN, particularly for low-value transfers. This feature aims to enhance user convenience.
Android Authority discovered this UPI Lite feature during an APK teardown of the WhatsApp beta app version 2.25.5.17. It is set to support quick and reliable payments even during periods of high server traffic, potentially revolutionizing digital payments with one-click transactions that avoid delays or failures.
Enhancing User Experience with UPI Lite
The app’s code reveals new functionalities, such as adding and withdrawing money directly through WhatsApp, thereby increasing the platform’s utility. It is important to highlight that setting up UPI Lite would be specific to each device and would not be transferable across multiple devices linked to the same account.

Developed by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), UPI Lite is built on the robust UPI ecosystem protocols and is optimized for processing transactions below Rs. 500. It offers the convenience of making payments linked to a user’s mobile number, even in the absence of a live internet connection, ensuring accessibility and ease of use for a wide range of transactions.
As WhatsApp continues to innovate and broaden its services, the integration of UPI Lite is set to enhance digital financial accessibility, making small transactions more efficient and hassle-free for millions of users across India.
