WhatsApp is testing a WhatsApp contact photo feature that shows saved address book images when a contact does not have a visible profile picture. The update is currently available in beta for iOS and is designed to make chats feel more personal and easier to recognise at a glance.
Instead of showing a blank or default placeholder image, WhatsApp can now use the photo already saved in your contacts. As a result, conversations may look more familiar, even when no official profile image appears inside the app. The new feature fills empty profile picture slots with images from your address book. That means if a contact has not uploaded a WhatsApp profile photo, the app can display the photo you already saved for that person.
The same logic also applies in some privacy-related cases. If a contact has chosen to restrict visibility of their profile photo, WhatsApp may show the saved image from your address book instead.
This change helps users identify friends more easily in chats and group conversations. It also reduces the number of faceless profiles inside the app. For your own account, WhatsApp may display the image saved in your contact card if you have not uploaded a profile picture. However, that image is visible only to you.
Other users will still see the default placeholder unless they also have your photo saved in their own contacts. In other words, the feature personalises the experience locally rather than replacing everyone’s profile photos. If a contact later uploads an official WhatsApp profile picture and makes it visible, that image will automatically replace the saved address book photo in your chat view.
At the moment, the update is limited to beta testers using the latest iOS version through TestFlight. However, some App Store users may also get early access while WhatsApp gathers wider feedback. This rollout follows an earlier beta update that allowed users to import profile photos from Facebook or Instagram. Together, these changes show WhatsApp is putting more focus on making profiles and chats feel more visual.
Why this update matters
This feature does not force users to upload a profile photo. Instead, it improves the look and feel of chats by using images people have already saved on their devices. For users, that means a more recognisable and personal messaging experience. At the same time, official WhatsApp profile photos still take priority whenever they are available and visible.
Note: There is no official announcement yet from WhatsApp’s blog (blog.whatsapp.com) or FAQ pages. The feature is still in beta testing and rolling out gradually to some iOS beta testers via TestFlight. It is not available in the stable App Store version for everyone.
