WhatsApp is enhancing user engagement by introducing a new feature that enables real-time voice chats with Meta AI.
According to WABetaInfo, which first identified this update in the WhatsApp beta for iOS (version 25.21.10.76, available via TestFlight), the feature provides a hands-free and accessible way for users to interact with the chatbot. The update is currently being rolled out to a limited group of beta testers, with plans to expand availability to a broader user base shortly.
To start a voice session, users tap the waveform icon in the Chats tab. For added convenience, a voice preferences setting allows automatic voice chat initiation when opening Meta AI—off by default to give users control.

Some users can launch conversations directly from the Calls tab without extra steps. The interface includes pre-made prompt suggestions to spark discussions on various topics, ideal for those unsure where to begin.
Users can attach photos from their gallery or camera in the text input area for visual context. Voice chats run in the background via a “collapse” icon, allowing Meta AI to listen and respond. At the same time, users multitask, like reading notes aloud or browsing, mimicking a phone call experience.
Privacy is prioritised: users can mute the microphone or end sessions by tapping the close button or switching to text chat. On iOS, an orange dot appears in the top-right corner when the microphone is active, a built-in Apple privacy safeguard that apps like WhatsApp cannot alter. This feature eliminates typing, benefiting multitaskers, drivers, or those with mobility challenges, making Meta AI interactions more intuitive and efficient.
