Meta will prohibit third-party AI chatbots from operating on WhatsApp starting January 15, 2026. The policy change will affect popular services, including ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, and Perplexity, requiring users to transition to Meta’s proprietary AI tools.
Under updated platform rules, Meta will block “general-purpose” conversational bots from external providers. The restriction specifically targets AI assistants powered by large language models from companies like OpenAI and Microsoft.
WhatsApp’s API will automatically block third-party AI traffic, cutting off developer access to these integrations. The policy exempts traditional rule-based chatbots, custom business workflows, and non-LLM automations, which remain supported through WhatsApp’s Business API.
Users of affected services will have different migration options before the January 2026 deadline. ChatGPT users can transfer their WhatsApp chat history to alternative platforms, while Microsoft Copilot users will lose access to their conversation history entirely.

The Business API continues serving as a core platform for customer service and sales communication, unaffected by the AI chatbot restrictions.
This decision supports Meta’s broader strategy to promote its Llama-based AI assistant across all company applications. By restricting external LLMs, Meta reduces regulatory risks associated with third-party data flows while centralising AI development within its ecosystem.
The move strengthens Meta’s control over AI interactions while decreasing dependence on external artificial intelligence models throughout its application suite.
