The Water & Power Development Authority (Wapda) has implemented new security measures, restricting middle and lower-level management from carrying smartphones within office premises due to potentially sensitive data breaches, as reported by The News on Monday.
Considering the current security situation and threat alerts, a notification was issued on April 14, stating that only officers ranked general manager and above can have smartphones (Android/OS) in the office.
The general manager (security) is responsible for enforcing these rules. Employees are expected to comply with the new regulations starting Monday, with violators facing potential consequences under Wapda Efficiency & Discipline (E&D) Rules 1978.
Exceptions to this order include officers in the Public Relations Department, Protocol Department, Security Department, and Wapda Secretariat.
Another circular noted that official documents have frequently been shared on various social media platforms, and general managers are urged to ensure their employees refrain from such activities. Non-compliance may result in proceedings under relevant conduct and cyber laws.
Many employees have strongly objected to the ban on carrying and using smartphones at work, calling it an autocratic and senseless decision. However, management believes the measure is crucial for enterprise security and employee productivity.
An official explained that the regulation is necessary to prevent possible breaches of sensitive data through smartphone cameras and microphones, whether intentional or not. The official added that regulating smartphone usage is a step in the right direction, as these devices can capture photos, videos, and audio of sensitive information.
