Australian champion Alexander Volkanovski reinforced his dominance of the UFC featherweight division on Sunday with a hard-fought victory over Diego Lopes in a punishing rematch in Sydney.
Headlining UFC 325, the 37-year-old defended his 145-pound title via unanimous decision, with judges scoring the contest 49–46, 49–46, and 50–45 after five demanding rounds.
Fighting in Australia for his first world title defence on home soil, Volkanovski soaked in the energy of a packed Qudos Bank Arena, where more than 20,000 fans backed their champion.
The former rugby league player walked out to the iconic Australian anthem Down Under, setting the tone for a night that celebrated his legacy. Australian cricket great Steve Waugh was among the high-profile supporters in attendance.
With the win, Volkanovski improved his record to 28–4 and extended his edge over Lopes, now 27–8. He also defeated the Brazilian by unanimous decision at UFC 314 in Miami last April, a bout he previously described as one of the finest of his career.

Tactical Battle Inside the Octagon
Despite entering as a clear favourite, Volkanovski approached the rematch with caution. Lopes, five inches taller and known for his power, opted for aggression rather than restraint.
Volkanovski pressed early, using cage control and takedown attempts to disrupt his opponent’s rhythm. Lopes responded with sharp leg kicks and landed a heavy right hand in the third round that briefly shook the champion.
Volkanovski stayed composed. His footwork, pace, and sustained combinations gradually drained the challenger. Lopes searched for a late finish but failed to find the decisive strike in the final round.

“It doesn’t get easier,” Volkanovski said afterwards. “He’s young and hungry. I wanted the finish, but we got the job done.”
Results Elsewhere on the Card
On the same main card, rising French contender Benoit Saint Denis delivered a statement win. He stopped Dan Hooker with a second-round technical knockout in the lightweight division to secure his fourth straight victory.
In the heavyweight bout, Brazilian Tallison Teixeira claimed a unanimous decision win over Tai Tuivasa, handing the Australian his sixth consecutive defeat.
Widely regarded as the greatest featherweight in UFC history, Volkanovski once again proved his staying power. His ability to absorb pressure, adapt mid-fight, and control championship rounds continues to define his reign.
