Eight residents were martyred, and approximately 50 people were injured, with several in critical condition, as Israeli drone strikes targeted Jenin in the West Bank.
According to the Palestinian Health Ministry, the operation comes on the heels of another brutal Israeli army raid on the Jenin refugee camp, which claimed the lives of multiple individuals just two weeks prior.
The Israeli army contends that its forces had targeted a “joint operations centre,” alleging it functioned as a command post for the “Jenin Brigade,” a local militant group. Meanwhile, control over the West Bank, including the Jenin area, is split between Israel and the Palestinian Authority.
International Concern and the Call for Peace Negotiations
Under Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who assumed power in December with ultra-nationalist allies, violence against Palestinians has escalated, prompting international concern. The United Nations has expressed worry over the intensifying violence in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, urging all parties involved to exercise calm and restraint.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres stated that he was “deeply saddened” by the recent loss of life and injuries and urged Israeli and Palestinian leaders to “take immediate steps to de-escalate the situation.” The surge in violence has sparked fears of a possible full-scale conflict.
The international community continues to advocate for an end to the violence, encouraging both sides to return to the negotiation table to seek a peaceful resolution to the enduring conflict. This dispute dates back to the Six-Day War of 1967 when Israel occupied the West Bank, which is currently home to approximately 490,000 Israelis living in settlements considered illegal under international law. The Palestinians demanded Israel’s withdrawal from all lands seized in the Six-Day War and the dismantling of all Jewish settlements to establish their independent state.
Despite these calls for peace, Netanyahu has vowed to “strengthen settlements,” showing little interest in reviving stalled peace talks since 2014. In another tragic incident amidst the escalating violence, a Palestinian youth was martyred near the West Bank city of Ramallah, highlighting the growing human toll of this conflict.
