Usman Khawaja Vows to Challenge ICC Over Shoe Slogan Row

Australian Test cricketer Usman Khawaja made a powerful statement by donning shoes with slogans “Freedom is a human right” and “All lives are equal” during a training session on Tuesday.

Khawaja’s statement that his commitment to advocating for rights and freedom was evident a day after he was seen wearing these slogan-inscribed shoes. Khawaja expressed his determination to raise his voice for those unable to speak for their rights.

Following this, Cricket Australia issued a statement expecting Khawaja to comply with the International Cricket Council (ICC) rules, discouraging political statements on the field. However, Khawaja announced his intention to challenge the ICC’s directive against wearing the shoes in future games, believing his message is not political. Cricket Australia has acknowledged its players’ right to personal opinions but stressed adherence to ICC guidelines.

Australia captain Pat Cummins, during a press conference, confirmed that Khawaja would not wear the shoes for the upcoming first Test against Pakistan but voiced support for Khawaja’s right to express his views. The debate around Khawaja’s act of solidarity, interpreted as support for Palestinians in Gaza, has drawn attention to the broader issue of athletes’ freedom of expression. Australia’s Sports Minister Anika Wells publicly backed Khawaja, advocating for athletes’ rights to voice opinions on important matters.

ICC Regulations and Historical Context

The ICC’s Code of Conduct restricts players from displaying personal messages without prior approval, especially those related to political, religious, or racial causes.

The policy had previously led to the banning of England batsman Moeen Ali, like Khawaja, a Muslim with Pakistani heritage, from wearing wristbands with “Save Gaza” and “Free Palestine” slogans in 2014. However, the ICC allowed gestures supporting the ‘Black Lives Matter’ movement in recent years. The matter awaits further comment from the ICC, highlighting the ongoing debate about athletes’ rights to express political views within the realms of their sport.
