The Punjab brick-kiln modernisation initiative has drawn praise from US lawmakers, who described it as a transformative step toward ending bonded labour and strengthening Pakistan-US relations.
Members of the Congressional Pakistan Caucus commended the Punjab government’s efforts to reform the traditional brick-kiln sector. In a letter to Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, Congressmen Thomas Suozzi and Jack Bergman acknowledged the province’s push to modernise operations and tackle environmental and labour concerns.
The lawmakers highlighted that reforming the brick-kiln industry could serve as a pilot project for eliminating bonded labour practices. They referenced findings from the US State Department’s 2022 Trafficking in Persons Report, which noted that millions in Pakistan remain affected by the peshgi system, a form of entrenched bonded labour.

According to the letter, mechanisation and regulatory improvements could help Pakistan meet international standards. Moreover, such reforms would make Punjab more attractive to foreign investors seeking ethical and sustainable partnerships.
The caucus said the initiative reflects a strong commitment from the provincial administration. It added that these reforms could enhance bilateral economic relations and reinforce the broader Pakistan-US partnership.
In addition, the lawmakers expressed their willingness to support efforts to end bonded labour. They encouraged provincial authorities to seek assistance where needed.
Observers believe that modernising the brick-kiln sector could reduce exploitation while improving environmental compliance and productivity.
