Ahsan Ramzan, Asian U-21 snooker champion, claims he was unjustly taken into custody by Lahore police on Wednesday night during a practice session at a snooker club.
Ramzan, who also held a world champion title, alleges that the police acted inappropriately and demanded action against the involved parties. The unexpected arrest occurred around 11:30 pm at a club on College Road in Lahore Township.
Despite reassurances of a safe premise with security measures and peaceful activity, Ramzan, the snooker club owner, and two others were asked to speak with the Green Town station house officer (SHO), which led to their short-term detention.
Official Response to the Incident
The incident has drawn the attention of Punjab caretaker Chief Minister Mohsin Naqvi, who has demanded a detailed report from the Lahore capital city police officer (CCPO). The chief minister has ordered a comprehensive investigation into the matter, ensuring the facts are unveiled and those responsible are held accountable.
Expressing his disappointment over the treatment of the renowned snooker player, he stated that such behaviour is “unacceptable under any circumstances”. In response, CCPO Bilal Siddique Kamyana has instructed the Saddar superintendent of police to conduct an inquiry into the matter, with a report due within 24 hours.
