The United States strongly demands the immediate and urgent release of Evan Gershkovich, a highly respected journalist working for the renowned Wall Street Journal, who is currently being unjustly detained in Russia.

The demand comes in the wake of the Russian security agency, the Federal Security Service (FSB), attempting to prolong Gershkovich’s detention. John Kirby, the spokesperson for White House national security, has vociferously stated that Gershkovich should not be detained, underlining the fundamental principle that journalism should never be considered a criminal act. Kirby has emphasized that the primary focus and priority lie in reuniting Gershkovich with his family, where he rightfully belongs.

According to credible reports, the FSB has lodged a request for a three-month extension of Gershkovich’s detention based on unfounded allegations of espionage. In response, US officials are exerting significant pressure on Russian authorities to grant immediate consular access to Gershkovich.

In this case, the United States firmly believes there are no justifiable reasons for denying consular access. Consular access is critical in upholding Gershkovich’s fundamental rights and providing the essential support and assistance he requires during this distressing period.

The United States maintains an unwavering commitment to securing the release of Evan Gershkovich and is actively engaged in an ongoing dialogue with Russian authorities to address this matter urgently. The United States government regards the detention of journalists as a grave violation of press freedom, a cornerstone of democratic societies.

The United States firmly believes journalism must never be criminalized, as it is an essential pillar of a free and democratic society.

Given the gravity of the situation, the urgent release of Evan Gershkovich remains an absolute top priority for the United States. All possible efforts and channels are being utilized to resolve this distressing situation swiftly and ensure the safe return of Gershkovich to his rightful place among his loved ones. The United States remains steadfast in its pursuit of justice and will continue to advocate for the freedom and protection of journalists worldwide.
