An unidentified fault caused a nationwide electricity outage early on Monday morning.
The Ministry of Energy, in a Twitter message, stated, “According to initial reports, the system frequency of the National Grid decreased at 7:34 this morning, which resulted in a widespread breakdown in the power system,”
In the 2nd message, the Ministry confirmed that restoration has already started from Warsak grid stations.
The ministry also claimed electricity was restored in multiple Islamabad Electric Supply Company (IESCO) and Peshawar Electric Supply Company grid stations (PESCO).
Power Minister Khurrum Dastagir told the local private news channel “Geo News” that power generation units are shut down overnight in winter to save fuel.
“When the systems were turned on one by one at 7:30 am this morning, frequency variation was reported in the southern part of the country between Jamshoro and Dadu. Voltage fluctuation shut down systems one by one. Dastagir said this was not a major crisis.
Power distribution companies confirmed the power outage before the ministry’s announcement.
The two Guddu-Quetta transmission lines tripped, according to QESCO. 22 Balochistan districts, including Quetta, are without power.
A K-Electric spokesperson, Imran Rana, did not disclose the reason for the outage.
A breakdown was also reported in Lahore.
