British Defence Minister John Healey has issued a direct warning regarding the Russian spy ship Yantar. He stated that “military options” are prepared. These options will be implemented should the vessel become a threat. The declaration comes after the Yantar directed lasers at Royal Air Force pilots. These pilots were sent to monitor its activities near UK waters.
Minister Healey described the act of targeting pilots with lasers as “deeply dangerous.” He confirmed that Britain is poised to react based on the ship’s subsequent actions. “We have military options ready should the Yantar change course,” he stated during his announcement on Wednesday.
The Yantar, a vessel designed for intelligence gathering and mapping undersea cables, is currently operating on the edge of British waters, north of Scotland. Healey emphasised the seriousness of the incident. He noted, “This is the first time we’ve had this action from Yantar directed against the British RAF. We take it extremely seriously.”

In response to the escalating situation, the Defence Minister has authorised a change to the Royal Navy’s rules of engagement. This modification allows British forces to more closely monitor the Yantar’s activities. It applies while the vessel remains in the UK’s wider territorial waters.
The Russian embassy in London responded to the accusations, dismissing them as “endless.” In a public statement, the embassy asserted that Russia’s actions “do not affect the interests of the United Kingdom and are not aimed at undermining its security.”

“We are not interested in British underwater communications,” the statement continued. It urged the British side to “refrain from destructive steps that exacerbate the crisis phenomena on the European continent.”
This incident highlights the heightened tensions and increased frequency of such monitoring missions since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022. The Royal Navy and RAF routinely shadow potential threats to national security.
