Singer Udit Narayan has ignited considerable controversy following the release of a video showing him kissing female fans during a live performance. While performing the beloved song “Tip Tip Barsa Paani,” Narayan was seen kissing fans on the lips, prompting extensive backlash on social media.
The latest video has led to the reemergence of previous clips showing Narayan kissing prominent female celebrities, such as singers Alka Yagnik and Shreya Ghoshal and actress Karisma Kapoor, at various public events.
In one instance at an Indian Idol event, Narayan’s kiss on Alka Yagnik’s cheek visibly surprised her, causing her to step back quickly. Similarly, discomfort was apparent in another event where Narayan repeated the gesture.
Other videos include moments where he kissed Shreya Ghoshal on the cheek following her award win and an unexpected kiss to Karisma Kapoor, which both celebrities seemed to find surprising.
In response to the backlash, Udit Narayan spoke with Hindustan Times, downplaying the incidents as expressions of fan adoration typical of live performances’ excitement. “Fans are so passionate. We are not like this; we are decent people,” Narayan explained. He suggested that such interactions are common and not worthy of overemphasis: “Fans think they are getting a chance to meet, so someone extends their hands for a handshake, some kiss the hands… this is all fan craziness, and it shouldn’t be given so much attention.”
Udit Narayan, a celebrated vocalist known for contributing to various Indian language film industries, including Hindi, Telugu, and Tamil, has had a distinguished career with four National Film Awards. His portfolio boasts performances in blockbuster films like “Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak,” “Lagaan,” and “Veer-Zaara.”
Although he has notable professional accomplishments, recent events have raised questions about his behavior at public gatherings.
