Pakistan born Shaiman Anwar scored the first hundred by a United Arab Emirates batsman at the World Cup as the Middle East side posted 278 for nine against Ireland in their Pool B match at Brisbane’s Gabba ground.
The UAE, who lost the toss, were in dire straits at 131 for six but Anwar led the charge with 106 off 83 balls and put on 107 for the seventh wicket with Amjad Javed (42).
At the start of the match, Ireland captain William Porterfield said he hopes his seamers could make the most of the initially humid conditions at the Gabba ground.
Ireland beat the West Indies by four wickets in their opening pool fixture while the UAE, like Ireland a non-Test nation, gave Zimbabwe a scare before losing by four wickets in their first match of the tournament.
Both sides made one change apiece as they bolstered their seam attacks.
Ireland recalled Brisbane-born Alex Cusack in place of Andy McBrine while the UAE — an amateur side — called up left-arm fast-medium bowler Manjula Guruge, with off-spinner Nasir Aziz omitted.
