Former US president Donald Trump faces indictment for keeping classified documents after leaving the Oval Office in 2021. However, his lawyer, Alina Habba, has contested the charges, stating that the files in question were declassified and that the former president did not engage in wrongdoing. Habba has asserted that “the accusations against the 76-year-old are politically motivated.”
Trump’s legal representative stated that he “would not take a plea deal to minimize the fallout” from the case as he aims for the Republican nomination for the 2024 election. Despite facing 37 charges, which include violations of the Espionage Act, making false statements, and conspiracy regarding his mishandling of classified information, Trump has maintained his innocence.
This is Trump’s second indictment since he left office; the first one pertained to hush payments he made to adult film star Stormy Daniels. In both instances, Trump has pled not guilty.
Lawyer’s Claims: Political Motivation and Election Interference
In an interview with Fox News, Habba stated, “He would never admit guilt because there was nothing wrong with declassifying documents,” indicating that the case against Trump is “completely politically motivated.” She suggested that the allegations represent a form of “election interference at its best.”
The lawyer also discussed the 2024 presidential candidate’s opposition to federal agents inspecting his belongings at his Mar-a-Lago home. She defended Trump’s actions, stating that as the ex-president, he had the right to retain classified documents that he had declassified.
Contrasting Habba’s claims, former US attorney general Bill Barr stated that Trump faced “solid counts” filed by the Department of Justice (DOJ) and was not a victim of a witch hunt, as he insisted. Barr dismissed the notion that a president could declare any document personal as “ridiculous.” He said that if even half of the indictment were true, it would be “very, very damning” for Trump.
Following the indictment, Trump urged Republicans in Congress to prioritize this issue while reiterating his innocence. On Truth Social, Trump condemned the Biden Administration and compared his situation to Biden’s handling of his documents.
The former president also expressed disbelief that such charges could be leveled against a former president. He emphasized his popularity in the polls for the upcoming 2024 Presidential Election and concluded his statement by asserting, “I AM AN INNOCENT MAN!” Despite the charges, Trump remains determined to “Make America Great Again.”
